Induction of supernova - like explosions by γ - ray bursts in close binary systems

چکیده
We propose that a γ-ray burst in one member of a binary may induce a supernova-like explosion of a close, white-dwarf companion. Such explosion might be brought about in rather light companions, which cannot undergo the standard accretion-induced explosion. This would give some GRB-associated supernova an appearance rather unlike that of the typical Type I. GRB 980425, if indeed associated with SN 1998bw is too weak to have produced it through our proposed mechanism.

Cosmic Explosions: Rapporteur Summary of the 10th Maryland Astrophysics Conference
This meeting covered the range of cosmic explosions from solar flares to γray bursts. A common theme is the role of rotation and magnetic fields. New information from the Sun shows that a “magnetic carpet” contains most of the surface field that feeds the corona. Disk instabilities in protostellar disks may provide most of the growth of a protostar. Type Ia supernovae continue to give evidence ...
متن کاملPulsar’s kicks and γ-ray bursts
Aims. The supernova-GRB (γ-ray burst) association is tested by showing the consistence of the distributions of pulsar’s kick velocities and GRB energies, under the assumption that cosmic GRBs are related to supernova explosions that form pulsars. Methods. These two distributions are derived from observations, and are checked by K-S test. Results. The deduced distribution of kick velocity from t...
متن کاملThe Cannonball Model of Gamma Ray Bursts: high-energy neutrinos and γ-rays
Recent observations suggest that γ-ray bursts (GRBs) and their afterglows are produced by jets of highly relativistic cannonballs (CBs), emitted in supernova (SN) explosions. The CBs, reheated by their collision with the shell, emit radiation that is collimated along their direction of motion and Dopplerboosted to the typical few-hundred keV energy of the GRB. Accompanying the GRB, there should...
متن کاملSupernova explosions , 511 keV photons , gamma ray bursts and mirror matter
There are three astroparticle physics puzzles which fire the imagination: the origin of the " Great Positron Producer " in the galactic bulge, the nature of the gamma-ray bursts central engine and the mechanism of supernova explosions. We show that the mirror matter model has the potential to solve all three of these puzzles in one beautifully simple strike.
متن کاملThe supernova-gamma-ray burst-jet connection.
The observed association between supernovae and gamma-ray bursts represents a cornerstone in our understanding of the nature of gamma-ray bursts. The collapsar model provides a theoretical framework for this connection. A key element is the launch of a bipolar jet (seen as a gamma-ray burst). The resulting hot cocoon disrupts the star, whereas the (56)Ni produced gives rise to radioactive heati...
